Needle Brigade: Knitting and stitching to clothe the needy

These senior seamstresses share a common thread.

"I feel very blessed that (I'm) alive here and able to do it," said Nancy Viney.

This group of gals gathers every week after a morning swim and a McDonald's meal to sew baby gowns and quilts. They also stitch countless chemo caps and knit sweaters for kids in need.

They've been at it for 10 years.

"It keeps me off the street. I love to knit," Viney said.

What began as a whim - turning old towels into bibs for Eastside Baby Corner - evolved into the Needle Brigade.

"The sweat shop," said Pina Mull, laughing.

The women donate more than 300 quilts a year.

At age 65, Grace Elder is the youngest sewer. But she might tell you otherwise.

"I'm one of these people. I hate age. I lie all the time," she said.

And strolling in late, wearing hot pink Crocs, we found the oldest.

"I guess that would be me," said Eloise Rouse.

At 94 years young, when Rouse isn't cranking out caps, she's a wild child.

"We went to the casino," she said, going on to list her activities. "Gambling, swimming, playing bridge and driving."

The aging - and sometimes aching - dozen has found companionship in quilting.

"I just love Tuesdays when they all come," said one member.

They've become friends who check on each other when someone doesn't show.

"It's a camaraderie," said Viney. "But to be able to give these to kids who've never had anything is beyond words."

The needle brigade is always looking for donations to help with their quilt making. You can drop them off at the Eastside Baby Corner in Issaquah.
