Hundreds gather to remember teen killed in crash

High school lacrosse players from all over Western Washington came together Wednesday night to honor a fellow player killed in a car accident.

Tyler Lucas was number 27 at Issaquah High School for two years, and his jersey and gear were at his vigil, but not the kid who belongs in it.

"It's good more grief than one parent one set of parents can hold," one said. "Only by sharing it do you get through it."

Grief is shared by the lacrosse community. Competitive players from Bellevue, Sammamish, Skyline, Issaquah, Lake Washington -- even from as far away as Bainbridge Island.

"What really struck me -- a lot of these guys, they're as tore up about it as me and his mom," said Jim Lucas, Tyler's father.

Tyler Lucas was killed in a car accident on I- 405 Tuesday morning. Washington State Patrol investigators say he lost control of his Dodge Neon when he hit slow traffic and struck  two other cars -- those drivers had minor injuries.

"Slow down," Jim Lucas said. "If there's any message -- slow down, leave for school 10 minutes early, take your time."

Tyler was on his way to a private school in Woodinville. He transferred from Issaquah High this year to improve his grades,  and recently committed to play NCAA Division II men's lacrosse at Dominican University in San Rafael, California  -- it was his dream.

"He was a great athlete and all of his friends loved him as you can see, just a great kid," said lacrosse player Travis Wright.

Tyler's family was overwhelmed to see the number of people there in heavy silence under the weight of the sorrow.

"I'm speechless," Jim Lucas said.

A funeral is planned for Monday at Hillside Cemetery.
